The Life and Times of Millar Buzzardby Phil Buzzard
2.1The Millar Family in Ireland
I have not been able to source actual documents on the emigration of John Millar (C.E. and grandfather of Emily Alice Millar), the first from the Millar family to emigrate from Ireland. Others have written accounts which I shall now recount.
John and his wife, Elizabeth Anne Franks, emigrated to Victoria in 1854. They had five children with them. The children were: Charles Gibson 1830 - 1900, Elizabeth Mary c1842 - 1891, Edwin Franks 1844 - 1928, Emerson Tennent c1847 - 1879 and Emily Blanche 1850 - 1923. They had two other girls who did not undertake the voyage. Adelaide Amelia who died in 1853 in Gloucestershire, England whilst staying with her uncle, and Julia Matilda who married in Belfast, Ireland in 1855 and re-settled in London, where she died in 1874.
John was an engineer who carried out the design of sewerage, water and other public works in the town of Londonderry, Ireland. He eventually went bankrupt. His peers thought him eccentric but very talented.
